Our Bookmarks

This page contains some links to places on the Internet we visit a lot (or occasionally in some instances). Some of them may be of no interest to people other than ourselves, but it's nice to collect them all in one place! We've also tried to add some commentary around them to put them in context.

The list is broken up into:

bulletMartin's links
bulletAnneliese's links
bulletFood & Wine links
bulletGeneral purpose links

And just for old times' sake, here are Martin's old bookmarks.

Martin's links

First up, a few Beer links: A great site with lots of info about the brewing industry is Breworld. Believe it or not, there are actually some very good New Zealand beers. And who can forget the great London brewery - Fullers.

One of the things that got me interested in computers was the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Believe it or not, people are still playing with them! And when they're not, they're writing PC conversions of the old games!

I still subscribe to a couple of UK magazines - Q and Maxim, and get them sent out to Australia. While in the UK I used to read PC Pro magazine as well.

Obviously, football is a big interest of mine. I keep up to date with the mighty Huddersfield Town through Teamtalk and a statistics page. I get my general football news from Soccernet or Sporting Life. I still participate in a Fantasy Football game in the UK, managing the Yorkshire Puddings in the Outovar League! Our league chairman also has his own page.

And of course you wouldn't be reading this without the Internet! I use various tools around the Internet - RealPlayer to watch videos, Gravity to read newsgroups, and NetMeeting to (attempt to) videoconference with people. I occasionally visit the eBay auction site in the hope of picking up cheap bits and bobs!

A lot of the photos on this site were taken using our Kodak digital camera.

These days, everyone seems to be offering free web-based email. I've got a couple of accounts which are occasionally used to send email from work. One is with Hotmail, the other with mail.com.

I like to keep up to date with how my Logica shares are performing, so I get my information from the Financial Times and a great investment site called the Motley Fool.

There's a great site called Terraserver which has satellite photos of large portions of the world (mainly USA). Here are links to two places I've been - the hotel I used to stay at when I travelled to Dallas on business, and the office I went to visit!

These days I go to the gym pretty regularly, and one of the instructors told me that I need to work hard on my stretching exercises to help prevent back problems.

Food & Wine Links

We order our fruit, veg and seafood over the Internet from the Greengrocer store. They deliver seafood fresh from the Sydney Fish Market. We order a lot of our wine from Wine Planet - they have a great selection.

Sydney has loads of brilliant restaurants and here are a couple of guides: Gourmet's Byte and de Groot's guide.

General Links

During the summer, there are a couple of outdoor cinemas around Sydney. The Moonlight Cinema is one of them. We failed to get to a single show this summer!

Our telephone service used to be with AAPT but now we're with DingoBlue coz they're cheaper. We bank with Commonwealth Bank of Australia (and they're pretty useless but so are most Australian banks). And we send our post home using Australia Post.

Public transport in Sydney is pretty good, so good that we don't have a car. But if we did want a car, we'd probably use drive.com.au to find it.

Australian TV is pretty useless - here's the New South Wales TV Guide and here is the website for Network TEN. Our choice of channels has increased dramatically since we got Foxtel cable. So now it's 30 channels....and nothing on!

If you want to find out what's on in Sydney, you can use CitySearch Sydney or sydneytoday.com.au. One activity we have tried is the theatre - we went to see Noises off presented by Actors Anonymous.

The Internet is great for keeping up with news - for local news it's either the Sydney Morning Herald or news.com.au, and for UK news we refer to the good old BBC.

Anneliese's Links

As many of you know I am a big fan of the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett.  I am also a collector of Discworld figures which are made by a company called Clarecraft.  They started making the figures when the first book came out and each one is approved by Terry before general release.  They also have a Guild for fans to join and a website: Terry Pratchett's Discworld Characters from Clarecraft where I can keep up on all the latest developments.  The Auction area is fairly new and it's interesting to discover quite how much money people are prepared to pay for some of the retired figures.

Another couple of Discworld related sites that I occasionally visit are the Discworld Fan Club Site & The L-Space Web.

Finally there is the Bernard Pearson Ceramics website.  Bernard is otherwise know as the Cunning Artificer and he makes Discworld related items (amongst other things).  Martin got me the limited edition Unseen University that Bernard sculpted as a birthday present. However, we're going to need a bigger house before I can display it as it's about 2 foot square!!

wishlist.com.au is a shopping site where you can compile a list of things you'd like.  I haven't been here in ages.

Being a kid at heart I occasionally like to reminisce by visiting The Smallfilms Treasury where the likes of Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog and the Clangers were created.

I was also a big lover of the Muppets when I was little and I have to say The Swedish Chef was one of my favourite characters.  At this site you get to sing along with him and listen to him making Chocolate Mousse!

For anyone who works in large corporations a visit to the The Dilbert ZoneŽ is a must.  Martin introduced me to this cartoon strip created by Scott Adams and it is incredibly accurate in its satirical look at life in a cubicle.

One of my major weaknesses is buying books so Dymocks Booksellers and Harper Collins are both good places to visit.  Martin also has Amazon.com bookmarked so I use that as well.

During my days working at BNP a regular lunchtime pastime was trying to complete the Times Two crossword.  Although I'm not as regular in my attempts I do still like to  try my hand via The Times website.

OK, so I used to watch a lot of daytime TV, so shoot me!  Anyway I discovered that Oprah has a website so just  once in a while I look in on what she's up to.

Two handy places to look for jobs whilst in Australia are mycareer.com.au and seek.com.

It seems that part of married life means it is now my job to send out birthday cards to friends and family on time.  Well just occasionally I slip up so FREE Electronic Greeting Cards! and Blue Mountain Arts' Electronic Greeting Cards are very useful back-ups, always assuming the recipient has internet access!

When one is traveling home with suitcases full of Christmas presents it is a good idea to find out  just how much HM Customs & Excise will let you bring into the country free of charge.

As most people will know Martin and I met each other at the Questors Theatre in Ealing, London.  It's the largest amateur theatre in the UK and it's good to know that we can keep in touch with what's going on.  Recently there has been a rash of weddings and babies so some bright spark has set up the Questors Babies site so we can all keep up on the arrival of future members!

My Mum is still working hard at Brockway Carpets  - however, they don't sell to the public so don't think this is a handy way to buy carpet over the Net.

One of the more worthwhile things on the Web is The Hunger Site where simply by clicking on a button you can donate food for the hungry of the world for absolutely no charge.  I strongly recommend you have a look and try to remember every day to call in.  The more people who visit the site, the more food gets donated (care of the sponsors), and the more hungry people get fed.
